Crenellated Hat

This is the pattern for my Crenellated Hat. It is a beanie with a knitted hem. The body of the hat is done in a crenellated pattern, which can be found on page 184 of “A Fourth Treasury of Knitting Patterns” by Barbara Walker. All information, instructions, and charts can be found in this post.

Crenellated Hat (modelled)

Materials

  • 2 skeins Filatura Di Crosa Zara Chiné
  • US #4 (3.5 mm) circular(s) or DPNs
  • US #6 (4 mm) circular(s) or DPNs
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

I worked my hat on a 32 inch circular using magic loop, but you could use double pointed needles or two circulars (e.g. however you prefer to knit in the round).

Gauge/Sizing

Zara Chiné works up for me at 23 stitches x 31 rows = 4 inches on US #6 in stockinette. But, the crenellated pattern kind of squishes things in both directions.

My hat ended up approximately 16.5 inches in circumference and 8.25 inches tall un-stretched. It fits my 23 inch head comfortably. However, I am told that I have a big head and like my brims a bit snug.

The main chart is a 24 stitch repeat. So, as long as you end up with a multiple of 24 sts after the increase round, you’re good to go.

  • You could adjust the width of the brim by casting on fewer/more stitches or by using smaller/larger needles.
  • You could just knit a ribbed brim, which would be more forgiving to different head sizes.
  • You could adjust the width of the hat body by using smaller/larger needles.
  • You could adjust the height of the hat by knitting fewer rows for the brim and/or by skipping some of the rows at the beginning of the “hat body” chart.

Instructions

Using US #4 (3.5 mm) needles:

  • Cast on 100 sts. (I used a long tail CO, but you may prefer to use a provisional CO if you are not comfortable picking up stitches from a CO edge.)
  • Knit 15 rounds.
  • Make a turning ridge by purling all stitches through the back loop.
  • Knit 16 rounds.
  • Close the hem by folding at the purl round (wrong/purl sides of the brim against each other) and knitting each stitch on your needle together with a stitch picked up from the cast on edge.
  • Knit one round.
  • Knit one round while increasing 20 stitches evenly to 120 stitches.

Using US #6 (4 mm) needles:

  • Repeat the “hat body” chart twice (see below).
  • Complete the “hat decrease” chart once (see below).
  • Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.
  • Thread tail though all remaining stitches to close the top of the hat.
  • Weave in all ends.
  • Enjoy your hat!
